Topic Guide: Iran Hostage Crisis

November 1979: fifty-two American nationals are held captive by Iranian students in protest of the United States’ role in the Iranian Revolution. For 444 days, the captives are held with minimal contact with the outside world. Multiple rescue attempts are made-and all fail. Jimmy Carter sees his popularity dwindle with each passing day. Yellow ribbons are strung across nearly every street in the United States. Finally, leaders from both sides gather in Algiers to negotiate for the release of the hostages. You, as the American delegation, are tasked with these negotiations. Remember: there is more than just the lives of the hostages at stake; it’s up to you to figure out what.
